Listening: July 2026
recap
1,028 tracks in July 2026
Top artists: Deerhunter, feeble little horse, Hiss Golden Messenger
Catalog Club: Deerhunter, 2007–2013
Really enjoyed going back through the Deerhunter back catalogue: I was very familiar with Halcyon Digest and Crytopgrams; less so things like Microcastle, which I now love. Hyden refers to them as a ‘pure’ indie rock band and celebrates the way they straddle the weird vs normal divide. It’a standing monthly comment, but I would otherwise have been unlikely to take a trip back through their albums and I’m so glad I did.
Elsewhere in July
- Lucinda Williams (Deluxe Edition) by Lucinda Williams — January’s catalog club was Lucinda in the 80s and 90s. I think I like this more even more than Cars on a Gravel Road.
- It’s Heavy in Here and The Lateness of the Hour by Eric Matthews — two gorgeous late 90s albums from a purveyor of baroque, orchestral pop. It occurs to me that I’ve heard both of these records dozens of times each over the last 25 years yet I’ve never listened to anything of his post-2000. More to add to the list!
- Florida Water Blues by twisted teens — I’m not sure I like this as much as blame the clown, the other album they released in 2026. I will give it another spin.
- Very fond of this feeble little horse song in particular:
