I cooked Christmas dinner for the wider family at Gem’s parents’ house. It wasn’t the most straightforward of tasks—I had relatively little area to work in, was constantly searching for vital equipment, never truly gained control of the oven’s functions, and none of the pots and pans I brought with me worked on the induction hob I didn’t know they had—but overall it was an eight out of ten success. People seemed happy, outwardly at least. Plus, this was the year my son became a magician.
